Online Notarizations

Remote Online Notarization (RON) Made Simple

Complete eligible notarizations online through a secure, live audio-video session with an Oregon-commissioned notary.

Fortis Remote Online Notary Services allows eligible signers and documents to complete the notarization process without meeting the notary in the same physical location.

What Is Remote Online Notarization?

Remote Online Notarization, commonly called RON, is a legally authorized process that allows a notary and a remotely located signer to communicate simultaneously through secure audio-video technology.

Instead of appearing before the notary in the same room, the signer appears through an approved online notarization platform. The signer completes identity verification, communicates directly with the notary, signs the electronic document, and watches as the notary completes the electronic notarial certificate.

The Benefits of Remote Online Notarization

Ultimate Convenience

Complete an eligible notarization from your home, office, hotel, or another private location with a reliable internet connection.

Secure Identity Verification

The approved platform guides the signer through identity-verification measures before the notarial act proceeds.

Live Online Session

Meet directly with the notary through live audio-video communication. The notary confirms your identity, communicates with you, and observes the signing.

Electronic Signatures

The signer applies an electronic signature to the eligible document while participating in the live session.

Completed Digital Documents

After the notarial act is completed, the electronically notarized document is returned through the platform or another approved delivery method.

How Remote Online Notarization Works

1. Schedule Your Appointment

Choose the Remote Online Notarization appointment type and select an available date and time.

Important: Do not sign the document before the appointment unless Fortis has specifically confirmed that you may do so.

2. Verify Your Identity

You will receive instructions for accessing the approved online platform.

The appointment cannot proceed when the signer cannot satisfy the identification requirements.

3. Meet by Live Video

At the scheduled time, join the secure live audio-video session using a compatible computer, tablet, or mobile device.

The notary will confirm your identity, ensure you understand the requested notarial act, and guide you through the electronic signing and notarization process.

4. Sign & Notarize Electronically

You will review and electronically sign the document while connected with the notary.

The notary observes the signing, completes the required notarial certificate, and applies the electronic notarial signature and seal.

5. Receive Your Completed Document

Download and retain the original electronic file. Printing the document creates a paper copy of the electronically notarized record and may not be treated the same as the original digital document by every receiving party.
